SOMOS Films, the Spanish-language feature film production company operated by Ivanna Villanueva and part of SOMOS Group (led by Luis Villanueva), together with Rodando Films, has begun production on the film “Cuando Menos lo Esperaba” (“When I Least Expected It”), a romantic drama/comedy currently being filmed in Bogotá, Colombia. With this film, SOMOS Films expands its catalog to 16 productions, all within genres that enjoy wide acceptance among Spanish-speaking audiences. Romantic comedies are a very popular film genre, combining elements that hold strong appeal for viewers.
When I Least Expected It is directed by Carlos Daniel Malavé. Malavé—producer and screenwriter with 14 films as director—is one of Venezuela’s most prolific filmmakers. His latest productions have won festivals such as the Kolkata International Film Festival (FIAPF), two awards from his country’s film academy, and two submissions by Venezuela to the Goya Awards of the Spanish Academy of Cinema. Carlos Malavé already has a productive relationship with SOMOS Films, having directed the comedy Tres Días para Reconquistarla (Colombia), the drama One Way (Venezuela), and Amor en el Aire(Colombia).
The film follows Carlos and Laura, portrayed by Venezuelan theater, film, and television actor Augusto Nitti and Colombian singer, actress, and dancer Michelle Gutty. They are joined by Karina Velázquez, Juancho Ortega, and Rodrigo Celis. Carlos and Laura meet at a meeting at their children’s school, and from that moment, they begin a friendship that slowly evolves into something more. Believing themselves to be happy in their supposedly stable relationships, they must now make a decision that could change their lives. It is an adult dramedy—a universal story about marriage, infidelity, and loyalty. The production is expected to film over four weeks in 6K format.
Since 2018, SOMOS Films has produced 14 feature films in various countries including Mexico, Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, and Peru, among others, fostering the local film industry and Latin American talent. The company has explored multiple genres—comedy, historical drama, melodrama, thrillers, and fiction—demonstrating its flexibility in handling diverse themes.
